Reader’s Question:

Hi, I’m Judd, and I’m staying here in Wilmington, Delaware for the holidays. I have a quick question: A friend of mine lends me his car to get around town, and I’m not quite sure if we aren’t breaking any laws or something.. you see, I’m a licensed driver, but if don’t have insurance. Is it okay for me to drive around alone in his car? I’m pretty sure he’s got insurance.

Can’t help but notice the question isn’t as ‘quick’ as you think it is, Judd… and the answer to that is equally tricky, in fact. You see, by logic, insurance follows the car– that is, as long as there isn’t a clause in the policy that states it is only so for listed drivers. If I were you, I’d check with him/her, and see if it is listed on the policy. If so, then it should cover any licensed driver behind the wheel, whether accompanied or alone.

And since you’re only gonna be here for the holidays, it should be clear that you are only borrowing the car. However, if you like it there and decide to extend your stay in Wilmington, Delaware, I would think it only right that your friend will have you listed as the primary driver on the policy. That’s the only way I think it could work without you having to secure your own insurance.

Still, all this wouldn’t be so tricky if you just ask your friend first about the insurance policy and the said clause before getting behind the wheel and speeding away. :) So, there. This should set things straight for you, Judd. Happy driving!
