Reader’s Question:

I live from a different country and will be shortly moving to Delaware could you please tell me, if my no claims bonus is valid in the U.S.?

Tommy

Brandywine, DE

Most Delaware insurance providers do not look at driving history from outside the US if you replace your license in a State license when moving to the US. Insurance providers tend to only look at a US driving history and not international or foreign driving records.

This is mostly because of the differences in systems and because there may not be a way in which to verify your previous driving record from outside the US. Most US car insurance companies are only able to use verifiable driving records when rating a potential policyholder. However, most international records are unverifiable.

You may bring your recent driving record and no claims bonus information, but also understand that most companies will rate you as a new motorist in the US with no US driving experience and use your date of first license in the US in the rate and not be able to use information from your no claims bonus to lower rates. Shop around, because some insurance companies do not use a driving record as a major factor in their rating system.
